Latin American Percussion & Rhythmic Awareness Workshop

Come and explore the mysteries and skills of rhythm via Latin American rhythms, phonetics and movement. Help dispel your inhibitions. Workshops that explore rhythm are essential to all musicians and good rhythmic sense is the responsibility of every musician. It can be fun!

The use of phonetics and movement are much neglected, yet these elements underpin and internalise rhythm. The study of rhythm is a much neglected area in western music. Many students engage in several years of studies and tuition yet never receive a formal lesson in rhythm! I feel that harmony and scales receive the builk of attention even though rhythm is the "life blood" of music. To quote the famous guitarist Charlie Christian:

"Music will survive without harmony but will not survive without rhythm."

Through the study of Latin American rhythms and their instruments we can develop an understanding of rhythm. Because their roots are in street music and are community based, they have to be build on simple lines, therefore a high degree of technical expertise is not necessary. However strict discipline and patience are required. Simple orchestration can result in exciting rhythms and a sense of ensemble and unity!
